Can you read the first paragraph of my debut novel and tell me if it is a good opening?

My debut has been out on Amazon Kindle for 2 years now. But out of the 5 or 6 friends who bought it, only one reviewed it - the rest asking for a refund and/or refusing to comment when I asked their opinion. I have re-written the first paragraph, among other things, in the hope of attracting more readers. Can you check the free sample on amazon and tell me what you think? The name is Metasebia Seifu and the title of the debut [not the sequel] is: If I could only draw, and knew how to paint.
