What do you do for network streaming?

I have an old computer I have a ton of movies and tv shows on. I have everything currently managed by the default windows sharing (WMP/normal file sharing) and play the media over the xbox/kindle fire. Xbox360 lets me go through the network and find files on the computer to play. I have VLC on the fire that does the same thing. I've been told there are better options. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Kindle or paperback, which do you prefer?

I don't read paperbacks anymore after I ruined my daughter's copy of Divergent trying to force it to stay open.

Regarding making an e-book for Kindle?

Do you need to buy or use any special software to create an e-book to upload onto Kindle?
And if so, any suggestions?
Or is a basic pdf file ok?

Can anything be done on a Kindle besides reading books?

I was just given one but I'm not sure what to do with it. I like to read books but the eye strain of reading them on a screen just won't do. So what else can be done with this thing?
