Why are eReaders so costly?

For example, the new Kindle that Amazon seems to be so proud of. 79 dollars for a touchscreen black-and-white device that can do just about nothing besides reading (99 dollars if you don't want the "free" ads).

Tablets come pretty close, in fact a few Google verified tablets are cheaper than $79. So why what's the point of buying an eReader? Is the screen better for your eyes? Or are the limits of the device an advantage?
