What is the legality of this from a US-based copyright / publishing house's side? (Please do not comment on why I would do this, etc. I am living abroad in Africa, there are no libraries here but a lot of expats and a lot of local students who need books. Also, renting out books is not an unheard of idea. It's done electronically through Kindle, but in the country where I am, that model has to be adjusted to work with hard-copy books).
