I read a Kindle sample a few months ago but can't remember the title of the book. I remember 3 chapters that introduced 3 separate storylines which would (I assume) eventually converge. I hope these were all the same book or else I'm really lost!
Novel starts with a crew member trapped in a room on a ship. She(?) hears noises outside the door and starts calling for help -- but stops when she realizes the ship has been boarded and her friends are being killed. Footsteps approach and stop outside the door.
Next chapter has another ship responding to a distress signal. A small team takes a shuttle to investigate but an urgent "Return home!" order from the captain interrupts their search.
Third chapter is about a cop/detective/security guard on some backwater planet dealing with an increase in hate crimes(?) between the locals and off-worlders.
Anything ring a bell?
