The Kindle Fires are pretty rigid in terms of how much people can customise them and make them their own - set lock screen images if the adverts are removed, no wallpaper images, no home screen customising just the Carousal, not to mention the limited app store etc. Because the Android OS is open source is it not possible to wipe a Kindle Fire completely and reinstall Android OS, without it being the heavily changed one by Amazon? I understand that the warranty for the tablet would be void but I'm not focussed on that yet. Apps etc could be accessed from the Google play store so that isn't a problem. I also understand it would probably be easier to just buy a Nexus 7 but I don't want to do that.
So, reinstalling Android on a Kindle Fire HD to get rid of the frankly crap Amazon one, is it possible?
